Treemap visualization on the BBC News website

Here I am, venturing into Nils’ territory – the realms of visualization!

I had a quick look at the BBC News homepage, and was immediately presented with a treemap visualization. It was part of a bigger treemap, showing the biggest, most popular and most active kinds of sites on the internet. No big surprises, but kinda nice to see.

The data used to generate the interactive treemap visualisation was collected by the Nielsen company and covers the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, US and Australia. The figures represent unique users for the month of January 2010.

The maps were produced using the Prefuse Flare software, developed by the University of California Berkeley.
